Today while reading the article circulated in the class, I hit upon this strange word "Akshaya Patra". I know "Patre" in kannada which means Bowl or a Vessel. But the word Patra has no meaning in any language. This is not the first instance of such anglicisation. There are many words which have lost meaning when used in other languages. To recall a few : "Dose" has become "Dosa". "Vade" has become "Vada" (I am not sure if it's the other way round!!!). I believe, this is a peculiar phenomenon that I have noticed happening with only kannada words. The question that I ask myself everytime I come across such words is "Is it difficult to pronounce kannada words"?? My learned friends having mother tongues other than kannada should shed light on this. Anyway, I request one and all whoever comes across this blog to make a concious effort to pronounce the kannada words like kannda words without anglicising it.
